Multifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL) implants are lenses that provide multiple focal points by use of an optical process called diffraction. They are designed to correct presbyopia (near vision loss that occurs with age) in order to provide a range of vision: near, intermediate and distance vision. Patients receiving presbyopia surgery may still need part-time glasses after implantation of this type of multifocal lens. Tecnis® and ReSTOR® are the two brands of lenses that utilize this technology. This style of multifocal lens implant does not correct astigmatism, but your doctor can often correct small amounts of astigmatism using limbal relaxing incisions at the time of surgery.
